Marvelous Moab!
Destinations, West — By ATV Mag on July 18, 2007 at 12:00 pmMoab means freedom,” says tour guide Dale Parriott. “You could take a different off-road route every day for a week and still not see all the trails within 20 miles of the town of Moab. You could easily spend a lifetime exploring the area.”
And that’s just what Parriott intends to do. Estimates of the entire off-road area, with the small town of Moab as a starting point, are around 1,000 square miles. Where did all the trails come from?
“You can thank the uranium miners for that,” Parriott tells us.
When uranium was discovered in the early 50s, the population of Moab jumped from 750 to 15,000 in just two months. House trailers and tents were everywhere.
Today, Moab caters more to off-road vehicle enthusiasts. Staging near the Colorado River and just three miles from the Moab city limits, we explored Kane Springs, Kane Creek, Hurah Pass, Amasa Back, Pritchet Canyon and Moab Rim trail.
Yes, we saw lots of varied terrain, but we just scratched the surface!
